About My Can

So, “why a can?” you may ask.

Well, in truth, I didn’t start out looking to create a website about a can. After all, it’s just a 10 cm high piece of tin with a lid and a handle. How could that be of interest to anyone? But, when you stop to consider it, the can really is a blank canvas – it can become anything I want it to be. And, I suppose I have always been searching for unique ways to express my creativity. So, when the can and I met for the first time, there was an instant bond – I saw its potential! Today the can is my hobby, my passion, a fun way to play, create and dream about all the things I can do based on one simple concept.

In Mexico City where I owned a graphic design company, I developed a concept called “the can full of ideas”. I used it as a promotional piece that I offered to potential new clients at trade shows. No one could ever resist the urge to look inside to discover the ideas it contained. Ten years later, when I moved to Canada, the can became the creative vehicle for delivering my resume. A plain manila envelope is simply not an option for a graphic designer. I needed to WOW potential employers with my creativity and make my resume stand out! It worked! Today I am the creative director at a small business marketing company called Walden.

I began to think about other possible applications for the can and it has become my personal challenge. I have created many gift cans and have taken hundreds of photos of people holding the can, playing with the can, examining the can, having fun with the can. In each case, people have expressed their unique “take” on the can.

Is it just coincidence that I express my creativity with “a can” and my personal philosophy on life is “I can”? I doubt it. I have found a positive way to bring my creativity to life, a life in which I believe anything is possible.
